Young people like to think that things can change quickly, through sudden revolutions. No, transformations are slow to happen, and therefore, they must be worked on with all the more awareness, patience and dedication. In the haste of an immediate revolution, one exposes oneself by reaction to despair, when one sees the empire of absurd prejudices and the action of evil passions. But the conscious anarchist does not despair: he sees the development of the laws of history and the gradual changes in society, and if he can act on the whole world only in an infinitesimal way, at least he can act on himself, work to free himself personally from all preconceived or imposed ideas, and gradually group around himself friends living and acting in the same way. It is from peer to peer, in small, loving and intelligent societies, that the great fraternal society will be formed.

Distributed Replicated Edge Agency Machine

The PUBLIC DREAM is an ongoing research program part of the NGI initiative of the European Commission.

In 2021, we will research and build technical solutions to empower communities everywhere to independently collaborate in the local creation and maintenance of open knowledge. The goal of DREAM is to enable the convergence of distributed P2P networks and linked data models, within social solidary economy and organize among trusted groups.

For example, a group may collect, share, and edit local commons data offline, then synchronize these datasets with other trusted peers and enrich a globally distributed database that can be used from the Web and edited asynchronously by independent parties over the P2P network.

For Activists

During the year we will propose hands-on collaborative workshops to inform software development, exploring and refining patterns of group collaboration. Participants sharing similar interests can form a group and enhance their collaborative practices. They can choose to work and organize online or offline—when they reconnect to the Internet, they may optionally share their work globally.

For Developers

We’re designing and documenting a peer-to-peer framework that others can build upon and will provide a set of reusable free software libraries, components and reference implementations. DREAM components are designed to work together but may be used independently:

  • DROMEDAR provides conflict-free replicated data structures to distribute linked data;
  • UPSYCLE provides a peer-to-peer networking system for private encrypted group collaboration;
  • SHRUTHI provides unikernel orchestration and provisioning capabilities.

    Les jeunes s’imaginent volontiers que les choses peuvent changer rapidement, par de brusques révolutions. Non, les transformations se font avec lenteur, et, par conséquent, il faut y travailler avec d’autant plus de conscience, de patience et de dévouement. Dans la hâte d’une révolution immédiate, on s’expose par réaction à désespérer, quand on constate l’empire des préjugés absurdes et l’action des passions mauvaises. Mais l’anarchiste conscient ne désespère point : il voit le développement des lois de l’histoire et les changements graduels de la société, et s’il ne peut agir sur l’ensemble du monde que d’une manière infinitésimale, du moins peut-il agir sur soi-même, travailler à se dégager personnellement de toutes idées préconçues ou imposées, et grouper peu à peu autour de soi des amis vivant et agissant de la même façon. C’est de proche en proche, par petites sociétés aimantes et intelligentes que se constituera la grande société fraternelle.
